Gridiron Victoria appear in Melbourne MX paper

Gridiron Victoria Article MX MelbourneIf you picked up a copy of MX in Melbourne on Monday afternoon and headed for the sports section, the sight of AFL star Chris Judd in American Football pads might have been a little confusing.

MX ran a feature article about Collingwood’s US ruck import Shae McNamara and the transition from American Football to Aussie Rules.

The article also quoted GV president Dan Levin and the two worked through each position and which AFL star would be best suited to make the switch.

A GROWING distaste for Australian rules football has formed the basis for the northern suburbs’ newest sporting club.

Northern Raiders

The Northern Raiders, the brainchild of Dale Cole, are one of three new clubs – Gippsland Gladiators and Ballarat Pioneers – joining Gridiron Victoria for the 2011 season.

The new clubs will join the Bay City Buccaneers, Berwick Miners, Croydon Rangers, Monash Warriors and the Western Crusaders in competition.

Cole, a lifelong Oakland Raiders fan, said the Northern Raiders were borne from his growing disengagement with “mainstream” sports in Australia.

THE northern suburbs will have a gridiron team, with the Northern Raiders being accepted into Gridiron Victoria competition.

The Raiders, to be based at Greensborough Secondary College, will be the only team in that league based in Melbourne’s north.

Fellow new member club the Gippsland Gladiators, to be based in Sale, and existing sides Ballarat Pioneers, Bay City Buccaneers, Berwick Miners, Croydon Rangers, Monash Warriors and the Western Crusaders will make up the competition.

AS the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers prepare for this weekend’s Superbowl XLV, the Gippsland Gladiators are gearing up for their debut season in the Gridiron Victoria league.

Gippsland became the latest member club of Gridiron Victoria when its official application was voted in at a recent committee meeting.

The new season doesn’t start until May but preparations are already well underway, with 33 players from across Gippsland attending Saturday’s training session in Sale.

Head coach Buck Buchanan has played and coached gridiron for about 18 years and he said the best thing was that people of all shapes and sizes could play.
