Congratulations to our newest GV Life Member: Wally Sanders

Wally Sanders: GV Life Member

At the 2016 AGM, the GV COM elected our newest and 15th Life Member Wally Sanders (shown above middle circa 1988)

A larger than life contributor to Gridiron Victoria, Wally has been involved for almost the entire existence of the league.

He began his playing career in 1986, started coaching in 1993, was President of Gridiron Victoria from 1986 to 1989 in addition to serving as a committee member another decade.

199 Games Coached (approx) 1993 – 2015 inclusive of representative games

2016 Annual General Meeting

On Monday 18th January, Gridiron Victoria held its 2016 Annual General Meeting. In accordance with our Constitution, the following Executive Committee (Exec) was elected:

  • President: Sam Weller
  • Vice President: Mark Levin
  • Secretary: Rob Hunter
  • Registrar: Ashlee Trimble

The position of Treasurer is still vacant and will be managed by the President in the interim.

Our sincere thanks to outgoing secretary Richie Howlett for his invaluable contribution to the league and tireless work over the past year.

The new Exec is firmly committed to a highly productive 100 days with a number of initiatives and major announcements pending for the 2016 men’s, junior and women’s competitions.

Statement regarding recent media claims

Following a recent article in the Herald Sun, dated December 29, 2015 5:55pm, by Peter Rolfe. The executive of Gridiron Victoria wish to make the following points clear, and would have done so to the reporter, if given sufficient time to respond to his email request.

In early 2015, the full committee of Gridiron Victoria, as a result of an annual review of operating rules, unanimously (with 1 abstention) voted to no longer allow female participation in their 15 year old to under 19 competition. Citing the duty of care owed by its accredited coaches to all players in the competition, and the fact that we have a viable 16 and over Women’s competition (or 15 with parents, club coaches, state director of coaching and executive clearance).

Victorian officials excel at World Championships

Victorian officials David Sinclair and Paul Mercer were honoured to be selected to officiate at the IFAF World Championships just recently in Canton Ohio USA.

Both men were selected for the 3rd time at International level: David served at the Junior’s in Austin Texas in 2012 and Kuwait in 2014, whilst Paul also officiated in Kuwait and at the Senior event in Austria in 2011. David was selected as an Umpire and Paul as a Back Judge.

The 26 officials on the panel represented 15 countries and included some of the best officials from outside of the USA. The pair, along with ACT official Shaun Dove worked 8-man crews and used headsets to communicate with each other.

Gridiron Victoria is proud to announce that week 6 of the 2015 Senior Men’s season will be a celebration of #GV2015 with the entire Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend held at the State Netball Hockey Center in Parkville.

Blockbuster men’s fixture now includes the FIRST EVER 11-a-side full kit WOMEN’S AMERICAN FOOTBALL MATCH IN AUSTRALIA!

The 2015 Gridiron Victoria Women’s All Star Game is the showpiece Friday night fixture kicking off at 7:30pm. Two teams comprising the very best players from the biggest and best women’s league in Australia will face off in front of a massive crowd under lights.
